Building Career Skills Through Creativity, Technology, and Design

At Cleveland Middle School, students are gaining hands-on experience that extends well beyond the traditional classroom. Through Media Arts, Digital Problem-Based Learning (DPBL), and Art I, our students are developing skills that connect directly to future careers while exploring their creativity and interests.

One recent Media Arts project challenged our 8th grade students to redesign a logo and banner concept for Pioneer Day. Projects like this introduce students to the design process used by graphic artists, marketing agencies, event planners, and businesses every day. Students learned how visual communication, branding, and creativity come together to capture attention and share a message effectively.

Our 6th grade DPBL students recently explored the power of data by learning to use Google Sheets to organize information and create pie charts. In today's world, data literacy is a valuable skill in nearly every profession. By learning how to collect, analyze, and present information visually, students are building a foundation for future success in business, technology, healthcare, engineering, and many other fields.

Meanwhile, students in Art I have begun the process of creating paper mache masks. While artistic expression is at the heart of the project, students are also developing planning, problem-solving, design, and craftsmanship skills. The creative process teaches perseverance, attention to detail, and the ability to turn an idea into a finished product.

Perhaps most importantly, these projects demonstrate how classroom learning can connect to real-world opportunities. We want our students to see that the skills they are developing today have value beyond school walls.
